It is in consultation with staff with the intention of closing the branch by February 20. A Westpac spokeswoman told Selwyn Times while it was aware of the township’s population increase, “certainly from a branch point of view it has just become very quiet”. But it would not make any further comments on the branch’s decline in patronage. “We are talking to staff at the moment. Until that process is complete and we have got their feedback, we don’t have any further comment to make,” the spokeswoman said. Lincoln’s population is projected to grow to 9190 by 2025. While the bank says they won’t know until a consultation period with staff runs its course, it looks like it’s a done deal. And that’s a shame. The bank says declining patronage and increasing internet banking are the reasons for the planned closure. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on what’s best for you, it’s the way of the world. You may, or may not, have noticed a couple of changes to your Selwyn Times. The masthead has changed, and page 2 has also been refreshed. There’s a few more changes in the wind, too. But progress has been slow as the school waits for the Ministry of Education to develop a preferred design option to help determine funding requirements. Discussions for the rebuild have been in progress for the past 18 months and a business case is currently in developGavin Kidd ment. MoE’s head of education infrastructure services Kim Shannon said the next stage is to identify a preferred option. “We do not have any further details around plans and time frames at this stage,” she said Principal Gavin Kidd said the entire school is to be rebuilt, apart from the gym and library, to modernise the school and it will receive completely new teaching blocks. “Ellesmere College was built

In Brief RAPID BUS TRIAL Plans are under way to trial a new rapid bus service between Rolleston and Christchurch. Environment Canterbury is asking for input from residents on stop locations and timing. The trial is planned to begin early next year. The service will consist of three trips in the morning and three trips in the afternoon. To ensure a fast journey with minimal delays, the number of pick-up and drop-off points will be limited to three to four locations at each end. Busiest Summer in Selwyn ever

MORE EVENTS than ever before have been packed into the annual Summer in Selwyn which starts on Friday. More than 70 district council and community events are planned in Selwyn as part of programme, which will run until April. District council senior events and recreation adviser Dave Tippett said there will be something for everyone to enjoy. He said the district council will present more events than previous years, including Christmas parades, community markets, fêtes, picnics, and fitness-related activities. There will be two drive-in movies at Rolleston and Darfield, and two outdoor movies at Lincoln and Leeston as part of the Spectrum Lighting and Sound outdoor family movies. Either park up and tune in to the special frequency on your car radio, or bring a seat, bean bag or blanket to sit on in front of the huge outdoor screen. Adams promises to help bereaved family By Georgia O’ConnorHarding A GREENDALE resident has met with Selwyn MP Amy Adams to put a face to a family bereaved by a suspected suicide. Geoff Booth met with Ms Adams on Friday to discuss his son Liam, 21, who died from a suspected suicide days after he had been treated Amy at Hillmorton Adams Hospital. Liam’s body was found in Beckenham Park, close to where he lived on October 2. Mr Booth said it was good to voice his concerns to Ms Adams. About three weeks before Liam’s death, he had threatened to harm himself at Halswell Quarry Park. Police were called and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital but discharged. Mr Booth has since told the Canterbury District

Health Board that hospital staff had wrongly discharged Liam and taken his word he was not going to harm himself. Mr Booth spoke to Ms Adams about the lack of support available for families left behind after a suicide, the mental health system and how not enough is spoken about

suicide publicly. “She is my representative in Parliament so she got an appreciation of what I have had to deal with and how hard it is,” he said. Mr Booth said while Victim Support has remained in touch with the family, it is not the same as receiving counselling. The family has been successful in getting counselling services funded by the Ministry of Education at Greendale School for Liam’s younger brother Finn. Mr Booth said, as an outcome of the meeting, Ms Adams said she would speak to people in Parliament to help bring change to the mental health system. Ms Adams said it would not be appropriate to comment on private meetings with constituents. Ms Adams said she is concerned by the reports she receives about the difficulty some people have accessing mental health support.

Bid to reunite family with soldier’s WW1 relic By Kurt Bayer AN ENGLISHMAN who uncovered a Cantabrian’s battlefield identification note rolled inside a World War I bullet casing is attempting to reunite the rare artefact with the old soldier’s descendants. And there may be a Lincoln connection. David Murray was holidaying near Ypres, Belgium, about 40 years ago when he bought a box of mixed WW1 memorabilia. It included a German cartridge case and bullet that has sat in a drawer at his Manchester home for decades. But last year, he took a closer look at the bullet case and found a piece of paper coiled inside it. After several hours, with the aid of medical tweezers, he managed to extract the note which read: ‘Gunner E. A. Kermode - Headquarters Staff N.Z.F.A. 7/2058 France’. Mr Murray understands that even with the issue of ‘dog tags’, many soldiers put personal details inside things like cartridge cases for identification purposes if they were killed. Now, he wants to trace gunner Kermode’s descendants to return the item to its rightful home.

But, he also wonders whether Edward Arthur Kermode was related to him, given that his family history information says they also emigrated from the Isle of Man. “It’s possible. My grandfather, with I think 13 kids in the family, all came out here from Isle of Man,” Kermode said. He wanted to ask other relatives and hunt for “concrete evidence” of a link to the WW1 veteran, but was interested in talking further with Mr Murray.

War ID: Edward Arthur Kermode survived World War 1 and now an Englishman who found a relic of his from the war is trying to trace his descendants.

“His grandsons could still be alive and well and, if I was his grandson, then I’d be very pleased to get that,” Mr Murray said. Edward Arthur Kermode was born at Isle of Man in the Irish Sea in 1895. His mother, a Mrs Goulding, came from the Devonshire market town of Honiton.

At the outbreak of war in 1914, gunner Kermode was working as an engineer in Christchurch. A year later, the 20-year-old bachelor, with the stature of a jockey, standing at 160cm and weighing just 55kg, enlisted. He left with the New Zealand Field Artillery and served in Egypt and France. Having survived the war, he

returned to Christchurch and was discharged in 1919, the war records show. Mr Murray says he’d happily send the bullet casing and note to New Zealand if the rightful owners came forward. “If it was in an antiques shop, it’d probably be a couple of quid,” he told the NZ Herald. “But I’ve got quite a strong

Kate Morris, 16, is one of 12 students from around the country selected to take part in a new Ministerial Youth Advisory Group. More than 300 students applied with the top applicants chosen by Labour education minister Chris Hipkins. The group aims to give students aged between 14 to 18 the opportunity to share their experiences in the education system and to discuss how it can be improved. Kate said she thought it would be a good opportunity to meet a bunch of like-minded people who want to make a change.

Kate Morris She said she would like to work on improving youth well-being as a result of the bad mental health and suicide rates in Canterbury. Kate would also like to ensure students are learning modern skills applicable to the world today, and there are equal learning opportunities for students

of different genders, races and socio-economical backgrounds. She said while the NCEA system is not bad by any stretch, improvements could be made. “Obviously not everyone will suit being assessed in the same way . . . not everyone will do well under the same exam structure,” she said. She already works to help other students with her role on the school’s student council and has recently taken part in the Limitless Conference. The conference aims to give students the opportunities to pursue work they are passionate about. The first induction of the group will be held in Wellington next February with students continuing to meet at the beginning of each school’s term.

Anniversary event to celebrate Rewi Alley’s birth THE 120th anniversary of writer Rewi Alley’s birth in Springfield is to be celebrated this Saturday. Mr Alley’s family and 109 guests from China will attend the celebration to be held at the

Lincoln High School and Rolleston College were among 13 schools from across Canterbury to attend. The event aimed to educate young people about what happens on the dairy farm and open their eyes to a wide range of career opportunities in the agriculture sector. There were 10 education sta-

tions where industry experts spoke about topics including soils, pasture, technology, water, irrigation and environmental sustainability. The farm where the event was held is owned by Lincoln University and run by the South Island Dairying Development Centre. The SIDDC is a partnership between the university, DairyNZ, Ravensdown, Livestock Improvement Corporation Ltd , Plant &Food Research, AgResearch and South Island Dairy Event.

Greener pastures for Rolleston rugby By Gordon Findlater ROLLESTON rugby will have a new home next year when it moves from Rolleston Reserve to Foster Park. The Rolleston Rugby Club currently has the use of four fullsized fields at Rolleston Reserve. That number will increase to seven when the move to Foster Park is complete. The club has also started a Givealittle page with the objective of raising funds to build new clubrooms at Foster Park. Paul While it has Frewen never been among the top contenders in country rugby, the platform is being laid for the club to build on its rapid growth in the junior ranks and retain young players when they reach the senior ranks. “We’ve had to grow the club from the ground up, we don’t have the luxury of the history that some other clubs have,” said club president Paul Frewen. “For us, it’s about building strong relationships with our juniors so they want to play senior rugby here when they’ve finished school. We’re building for the next 10 years and we believe that we need the

clubrooms, the facilities and the grounds that fit that model.” This year the club had 29 teams, including 19 junior teams. Each one has been very competitive through to under-18 level in the Ellesmere competition. The club’s move to Foster Park also comes in the wake of the development of the new multi-use facility for Rolleston which is set to start in 2018 and be completed the following year. The development on the current Rolleston Reserve site is a key project in the town centre development. The original plan was for the rugby club to move to Brookside

Park. However, it soon became apparent it wasn’t a viable option due to the park not being big enough. The move to Foster Park will enable the club to expand its popular Tuesday night touch competition which has 95 teams and a waiting list. “The move is going to give us more capacity for teams, more room for coaching and trainings and better lighting. It also gives us the potential to do something about our clubrooms because they are currently not big enough,” said Frewen. The new fields at Foster Park will also host softball and baseball from 2018. The aim

is for them to also share the clubroom facilities which the rugby club is hoping to create. One option is to relocate the existing rugby clubrooms from Rolleston Reserve to Foster Park. However, the rooms are no longer big enough for the growing club and aren’t up to the current building code. “When we have club day, we have to stagger our prize-giving throughout the day because we just can’t fit everyone in the club rooms,” said Frewen. The district council will provide changing rooms at the club’s new location at Foster Park.

No arrests yet after assault on teenager By Andrew King POLICE ARE yet to make an arrest after a brutal assault of a teenager in Rolleston. A 15-year-old victim was viciously attacked by a group in Rolleston after a fireworks display on November 4. They dragged him to a water race and held his head under water. Some in the group chanted “drown him”. The mother of the victim told the Selwyn Times the police are doing their job and she was waiting to hear back from them. Police have remained tightlipped about the investigation saying inquires are “ongoing.” The Selwyn Times has learned police have been given names of suspects and private Facebook messages of an apology to the victim. Many people have posted about the incident online, including friends of the victim, who believe they know who the attackers were, said the victim’s mother. After being dragged to the water race, he broke free of his attackers and ran off, collapsing close to his home.

Ellesmere College begins recruitment process for principal By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RECRUITMENT for Ellesmere College’s next principal has begun. After eight years at the school, principal Gavin Kidd has resigned to take on a new position as director of the Dunedin Secondary Schools Partnership Charitable Trust. Mr Kidd said Ellesmere has been a great school to be principal of and he hadn’t been planning to leave. “But sometimes as I tell the students, opportunities come up and you don’t want to look back and regret you didn’t take a calculated risk at times,” Mr Kidd said. Mr Kidd has been a secondary principal for 11 years, based at Catlins Area School before he moved to Ellesmere. His new role means he will support the 12 secondary schools in the Dunedin area along with represent them with other agencies including the Ministry of Education. He will step into the role as either secretary or treasurer for the Otago

Primary Principals’ Association and manage alternative education for the region. Mr Kidd will also have oversight of Dunedin’s London House Learning Centre which provides alternative education for year 9 to 11 students. He will begin his new role at the end of January and the school’s board of trustees are hoping to have a new principal by term 2 next year. “I think the highlight for me being principal at the college has been the amazing students that have come through,” Mr Kidd said. He said he has seen great changes at the school including a growth in its kapa haka group and upgrades of the school library and technology department. Mr Kidd said NCEA results have greatly improved with the school having the fifth highest participation rate for NCEA Level 2 for a decile 8 school in the country last year. He said there has been a real growth in sport with the school’s senior girls

basketball team qualifying for national basketball tournaments and the school making up a combined rugby team with Selwyn schools for the UC Cup. Opportunities for students to travel internationally has grown with biannual trips to Rarotonga, and students travelling to places including Nepal to take part in the Third World Challenge. A sports group will travel to the United States this week to look at basketball programmes overseas and a team will take part in the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane next year. Springfield Walkway a community effort Springfield Township Committee secretary Sean Ellis writes about how the community banded together to improve pedestrian safety by constructing a new walkway THE SPRINGFIELD Walkway all started in 2015 after a fatality and several near misses on the road from the Springfield township to the Kowai Pass Domain camping ground. Murray and Lesley Faulkner came up with the idea of gifting a strip of their land that runs along the road to the district council so a walking path could be built to remove the danger of walking along the highway. They then approached the township committee which took on the challenge. The township committee did have money to use on a development-type project and decided this ticked all the boxes. So now we had the land and a budget to start work. We had to finalise the position of the track – sounds easy, but this started

several robust discussions. Two routes were on the table – a track running along the side of the road, and the second starting at Rewi Alley Memorial then running along an embankment through an avenue of trees and dropping down onto the roadside and then following the road to the domain. In July 2016, the committee moved to build the track along

the embankment. At this point, the domain committee decided that because the track was running to the domain, it would help, making it a community project. This was great news, and it was agreed the township committee would build along the embankment and the domain committee would build from the end of the embankment to Domain Rd.

So it was all systems go, but stop we have no funds. A change in how development fund money could be spent by the Government had to be set into law so we had to wait and wait. At last, the money was made available to the township and work started on the track in March this year. The embankment track crossed a small stream and it was decided to cross the stream using a large culvert. The district council was approached to see what paperwork/permits were required to put the culvert in place. Because the stream was running, we would require a building permit. The months rolled by with the township committee chairman writing continually to the district council about the delay. Five months later, the district council got back to the township committee, saying it needed more information. At this point, the district council had confirmed the culvert and paid for it and confirmed the contractor who was revving his engines ready to go. In September, the township committee was told the resource consent would take 28 days. At

last we were told we would have resource consent on October 13, hurray! We finally got the consent on November 3 – near enough. Then, after all that waiting, it rained for a week, but work finally started on November 13. The top soil was removed by Curle Contracting Ltd and traded in with farmer Graeme Dawson for core fill. The huge culvert was lifted into place. The retaining wall post was put in by boring holes first with a bore donated by 73 Hire Ltd. With the retaining wall in and a lot more earthwork by the Curle gang, we had a crossing. All the other jobs were done at the same time, including the tree trimming, the fences, which were re-aligned by myself, and the gates, which were put in place by Mike Warwick Contracting. After five days of hard work backed up Jan Curle and Sian Ellis supplying morning tea, we had a track running from Rewi Alley Memorial to the start of the domain track. Well done to everyone involved – a real township effort with all the contractors’ involved living in Springfield. And a really big thank you to Lesley and Murray Faulkner who came up with the idea.

Eric Kars – I strongly oppose the closure of water races in Malvern as a result of the Central Plains Water scheme. As a farmer in this area for 43 years farming sheep and cropping we rely on our water race system for stock water as I am a dry land farmer. Also, this network provides water very necessary for firefighting and provides access to water for numerous types of wildlife and fish. The system provides our stock with water 24/7 and we pay for this service gratefully. As far as CPW, it has no hydrants on its scheme and has said it is for irrigation purposes only. I have contacted the district council in the past about issues arising from some CPW shareholders wanting to get rid of water races and said no way will my stock water be stopped unless replaced by a better one (not at my expense). A part from the fact it is essential for dry land farming, it provides drainage in times of flooding. If these races did not exist in times of storms in our area where flooding occurs we would be in trouble without the water race system. I am a dry land farmer and I need the water race system to farm my property and I will not be able to farm successfully without it. Stock must have water.

Why did you decide to resign as chairwoman? I have decided to still stay on as trustee as part of the committee itself. I have been doing the chair role probably for two-and-a-half years. I just feel like that is a really good amount of time to lead an organisation. You kind of get to look at the stuff you can change and you have time to be able to implement your own stamp on things and build long lasting connections. I just felt like it was my time to step down and give someone else a go. The environment is obviously a big passion of yours? My No 1 passion is connecting people into the environment, especially nature. Getting them out there and involved. It is great for well-being, as well as for our natural heritage. When did you first get involved with the trust and why did you decide to join? I have been involved with the trust since it started, so back in 2007. I was a student at Lincoln High School and I was heavily involved in the environment community there. I was leading the environmental group and Dr

Sue Jarvis started the trust. She was a teacher at Lincoln High School at the time. I went along representing the Lincoln High School side of things at the trust and then I ended up at Lincoln University studying science ecology. I was intermittent at meetings and, when I finished university, I became a trustee then a secretary. When Sue said she was going to step down as chair I thought ‘why not take that on for a bit’. Do you find people in Lincoln are supportive of the concept of being an envirotown? I think people are really interested in it. Our numbers at our events, both in Lincoln and within Selwyn, have grown. Although we are called Lincoln Envirotown Trust our objectives and aims are to reach over the whole Selwyn district so we are pushing a lot of our events out further into Selwyn. As far as we have got so far is out to Springfield. Our events every year are increasing in numbers. Our Facebook followers; we are struggling to keep up with the demand to be honest. Some employees are paid so we can do

quite a lot. We have a massive volunteer base and support from businesses, the district council and funders. Tell me about some of the initiatives you have lined up. We have an awesome event coming up next year that is going to be more around the cultural sustainability sphere. Obviously last year we had the BioBlitz. That was a big event we had running out of Lincoln where thousands of people came and worked with scientists out in the Liffey Domain counting species. Next year we have got all our usual things we are doing. We are going to have KidsFest and Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week. We are still doing our battery recycling, our Selwyn Timebank. We have got the community garden where we have events. Everything from compost to bees. We have native plantings at Mahoe Reserve. Our brand new website will be live by next year. We are hoping before Christmas it can work on people’s smart phones. We will have an open forum where people can ask questions about what is in their garden or if they are having trouble with their compost.

promises to stay true to her green roots You are quite interested in gardening? I do quite like gardening. We have a lot of beehives at home. I am interested in veggie gardens and obviously natives and connections between plants and wildlife and what plants bring birds and insects in. What environmental issues are you most passionate about? My biggest one is people’s loss of connection to nature. Not even technology – you can use technology to empower people’s connection to nature as well. It is just more back in the day, people spent more time outside. I feel like teaching younger generations about how the world around us makes people more engaged. It helps your well-being, gives you better coping mechanisms, lowers your cortisol levels. There is all this research coming out now to do with it. That was why, when I was chair, the team pushed doing the BioBlitz and KidsFest themes on the forest floor and water. We were all quite keen on that. What are some of your favourite achievements as chairwoman? Probably one of my favourite things being chair was I got to work with so many wonderful people. We met through music at bar Double Happy. It is not there anymore. James works in the agriculture sector but he is also a DJ. We have been together a long time. I quite enjoy music as well, he is a keen gardener, he is probably better at vegetable gardening than I am. He is the one massively into beehives. We have got 25 staggered around on

I don’t do it as much these days. My favourite music is New Zealand dubstep, soul and reggae. New Zealand artists are where my love for music stemmed from with countless gigs when I was younger. I really like Ladi6. My partner is a DJ and I worked in the club where he had his speakers. It was pretty much like pouring lemonade in the early hours of the morning for him while he was waiting for the gigs to finish to get his speakers and I was waiting to finish work. That is our wee love story. Tell me about your job at the Department of Conservation? I am a technical adviser. I

work on biodiversity monitoring. It can be challenging at times which is good. My role is varied. Basically, I deal with a lot of plants – they are pressed plants and a lot of different plants that come in from all over the country. I spend a lot of time out at Lincoln and Landcare Research dropping various things off to them and working with their scientists. Did you have an interest in the environment growing up? I think it came from my grandma and grandad. My grandad used to own a plant nursery out in West Melton, so I used to spend a lot of time out there with him. My grandma is very much into picking up rubbish and calls the district council all the time. My immediate family isn’t into it. I have naturally always had a passion for biology, living things interest me. I knew since I was nine, I would be doing something to do with the environment. Have you had a chance to travel overseas? We have done a bit of

travelling overseas. Last year we were in Morocco, Croatia and Amsterdam. We have done Vietnam, South East Asia. We are doing Bali next year. I have always wanted to go to the Amazon. I haven’t been there yet but I am still going to say it is my favourite place. I want to go to the jungle. I have wanted to do that since I was nine. Is there anything you want to add about caring for the environment? I think the main message is to get out into your environment and connect with nature.

Weedons just staying in touch on leader board By Andrew King WEEDONS’ PREMIER cricket team have dropped to fourth on the table after a 14-run loss to Sefton on Saturday. Set 213 to win in the country premier one-day competition, Weedons looked in control for most of the game, but lost wickets at crucial times to be all out for 199 in 41.1 overs. It was the return of Nigel Granger from injury that swung the game in Sefton’s favour as he hit an unbeaten 65 and put on a 100-run partnership with Ollie Bragg. Sefton president Chris Rowe called it a “match-winning performance” after Granger came back from an achilles injury. “He had been out since the first round but he has come back with a really strong performance,” he said. The competition now moves into the second round before splitting into a top-four, bottomfour competition, meaning

Huge turnout at motor fest

Darfield rider part of world champion team DARFIELD’S LEAH Zydenbos helped the New Zealand mounted games under-17 team win a world championship in Auckland at the weekend. The year 11 Rangi Ruru Girls’ student was up against some of the world’s leading equestrians at the event named Equitana. Teams from Australia, Ireland, and England held the next top spots in the competition. Rangi Ruru director of equestrian Pippa Young said it was a tough ride for the team with Leah, riding her borrowed mount Cheeky. “It was very tense in the final particularly, with two eliminations and a tie-breaker in the very last game of the competition,” she said. “The New Zealand under-17 team has been amazing over these few days. Leah and her teammates worked so hard to triumph over the riders from all the other countries, with Australia, Ireland and England being particularly strong.” Ms Young said Leah really excelled at the event. “She has been outstanding; an exceptional team member. “Her parents Sue and Rick, and brother Luke – all mounted games competitors themselves – are understandably very proud of their daughter too.”

About 800 people attended the first outdoor car truck, motor-cycle and farm machinery show on Sunday. District councillor and organising committee member Craig Watson said it was a huge event. “It was massive. It was far bigger than we could have ever expected which is really positive and the feedback has been amazing,” he said. Funds raised from the day have gone into supporting St John Ambulance Rolleston. Cr Watson said while the committee did not yet have a figure for how much was fundraised it is estimated to be between $20,000 to $30,000. “A lot of people don’t know

about St John having to fundraise locally to survive - it was good for them to tell their story,” he said.

Cr Watson said the committee will now work out whether another event can be organised for next year and what is involved.

Leah was a key part of the school’s success at the South Island Schools’ Mounted Games held at the Ellesmere Showgrounds in late April this year. She and Lily Buckley won the South Island interschools competition. Leah has also excelled in a number of other competitions, throughout New Zealand. She was recognised for this as a finalist in the Zonta individual sporting awards this year.

The event offered a countrystyled day out featuring horses, sheep, cattle, goats, poultry, sheep dog trials, Highland bands and steam tractors. What was that Civil Defence alarm? Over the weekend you may have received a test alert on your mobile phone from the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management. Emergency Mobile Alerts are emergency messages sent by authorised emergency agencies to mobile phones enabled to receive alerts. The system uses cell broadcast technology to send messages to enabled phones, so alerts can be targeted to specific geographic locations. People don’t need to sign up to receive alerts, or download an app, alerts will be sent to every enabled phone in the area during the broadcast period. It is expected around one third of phones will initially be able to receive the alerts. This number is expected to rise substantially over time as people replace their phones with newer models.

Summer in Selwyn An extra month’s worth of events have been packed into the 2017/18 annual Summer in Selwyn programme, kicking off at the start of December.

The Emergency Mobile Alert is about keeping you safe, so you won’t be able to opt-out of receiving them. These alerts will run alongside traditional channels used to inform people during emergencies. The Emergency Mobile Alert will appear automatically on your phone’s screen with a unique and penetrating warning sound. We are proud to present even more events than in previous years, with a great range of community-organised events on offer as well, including Christmas parades, community markets, fêtes and picnics, and fitness-related events,” he says. Council events include two drive-in movies at Rolleston and Darfield, and two outdoor movies at Lincoln and Leeston as part of the Spectrum Lighting and Sound Outdoor Family Movies. The Faringdon Summer Pool Parties will include a special Christmas Pool Party at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, as well as Darfield and Southbridge community pools. The New World Rolleston Picnic in the Parks and The Faringdon Summer Skate Jams are coming to eight locations around the district. The New World Rolleston Teddy Bears’ Picnic will return to Rolleston Community Centre and Rolleston Reserve. Other entertainment includes live music at local parks with the Faringdon Music on the Green. Residents can bring a picnic and relax while listening to an outstanding line-up of our local talented musicians at Rolleston, Leeston, Darfield and Lincoln. Footpath repairs will be occurring on Cathcart Crescent and Petticoat Lane. These footpaths will be closed. Kerb and channel works, footpath and kea crossing construction will be occurring on Weedons Ross Road in West Melton. Traffic delays and minor detours may be in place during the construction period. Access to the local shopping centre, pre-school and primary school will be available at all times. These works are expected to last until early December. A culvert installation is occurring at the intersection of Edward Street, Lincoln Tai Tapu Road, Ellesmere Road and Hudsons Road as a land drainage project.

Buskers take to streets for 25th year

COMEDIANS, daredevils, dancers, singers and acrobats will hit the streets in January to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the World Buskers Festival. Fifty-five performers representing 14 countries will descend on the city for the annual 10-day festival from January 18-28. Festival producer Tim Bain said its programme was about creating a line-up which reflected the past, while at the same time looked forward to the future. “It’s daring, bold, cheeky, hilarious and world class,” he said. To celebrate 25 years, there will be five headline shows. After making it through to the America’s Got Talent final last year, The Boy with Tape on His Face (right) is coming home to premier his new ideas. Urzila Carlson will perform her new show Unacceptable

and the Topp Twins will entertain the crowds with their classic Kiwi humour. A Night at the Musicals, featuring Le Gateau Chocolat, will bring musical entertainment, as will Crossdresser for Christ, featuring Ginger Minj from RuPaul’s Drag Race. New features will include a Buskers Bar and Night Food Market at the Arts Centre every night, a Cabaret Club at the Great Hall, and the Laugh Lounge at Sixty6 on Peterborough. Buskers will also perform at the Friday Night Food Market in Cathedral Square and in City Mall at lunchtimes outside The Crossing.

Festival director Melissa Haberfield encouraged people to embrace the festival and celebrate its 25th birthday. “For 10 days and 11 nights, our

Ellesmere College Newsletter 2017 Principal’s Message As I look back over the past year I have every reason to be proud of our school and in particular of our students. The talent, commitment, caring and achievement of our students makes Ellesmere College a great place in which to learn and teach. At Ellesmere College we care about the whole person, academically, socially, culturally and with regard to personal wellbeing. We aim to prepare our students for the world beyond high school. I have been thrilled to observe how the vast majority of our students have consistently demonstrated the College ‘RISE’ values of Respect, Integrity, Success and Empathy. During this year it has been a real privilege to see our student leaders at work: Head Students Jess Dunlop, Freddie Gash, Ella McClure and Jack Dudley; our Whanau Prefects, Special Action Group Prefects, School Council members as well as many others who positively influence others. Student initiatives such as the inaugural College Fair were a great success. The core business of schools is learning and often schools are judged by their level of academic success. In this respect we can hold our heads high. Our Level 2 students last year had the highest pass rate (97.1%) for any Decile 8 state school in New Zealand, and the 5th highest overall. At all three NCEA levels we were significantly above the national average. Over the last three years the most dramatic improvement has been at Level 3 with a 26% improvement by female students and 32% improvement by male students. These improving NCEA results have been reflected in a significant increase in NCEA subject endorsements over this time. There have been many exciting student opportunities this year, both in and outside the classroom. These have included the cultural trip to Rarotonga, the World Challenge trip to Nepal, the forthcoming Basketball trip to the United States as well as music, including hosting the Country Schools’ Music Festival. The school has held a junior drama production of ‘Into the Woods’, the special 40 Hour Famine event ‘A Night in Syria’, speech competitions, numerous sporting events, camps, skiing and sailing trips. The college has also hosted school visits from Japan and Australia and, for next year, school trips are being organised to visit the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, sister schools in Japan and a World Challenge Trip to Myanmar. Ellesmere College Sporting and Cultural Awards Ceremony Ellesmere College celebrated the success of its many talented students at the annual Sporting and Cultural Awards Ceremony in late September. Hosted by Cultural Prefects, Jak Mitchell and Georgia Hague, the evening began with an amazing performance by the Kapa Haka group and featured guest speaker Mark Walton, a musician with an international reputation. “Into the Woods” – our Junior School Production Steampunk melded with popup storybooks in the Ellesmere College adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairy tale which was performed in late November. Into the Woods, featured all of your favourite characters: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (long with his beanstalk) and the Witch in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables. But the tale was very twisted as were the puppets, pop-up sets, and top hats that featured in Ellesmere’s colourful, creative pantomime. Rapunzel sat in a giant clock tower, Jack’s Beanstalk was made of umbrellas, and the Princes had a great Nerf gun battle. Into the Woods played to enthusiastic audiences. The show was produced and directed by Drama teacher, Mrs Christine Cheesman, who was supported by Emma Dunlop from Leeston’s Rhythm and Dance studio.

Head Students: Fylgia Romero Fylgia has been involved in the leadership of many school activities such as the student council, the student wellbeing team, World Vision, music and public speaking. Outside of school she is very active in the Catholic Youth Group [Youth for Christ]. Born in the Philippines, Fylgia loves Ellesmere College. She is a gifted leader with exceptional public speaking skills. Iain Wright Iain has an outstanding academic record including NCEA Excellence endorsements. He comes to this role with leadership experience that has been developed in his Church’s children’s programme and as a leader on school camps. A keen sportsman, Iain has represented Ellesmere College at Canterbury, South Island and National levels in cross-country and athletics and plays basketball, tennis and indoor football. Deputy Head Students: Matt Riches Matt enjoys public speaking and has had success in speech competitions since Year 4. Through Ellesmere College’s Enhancing Excellence programme he created a booklet to help the transition of Year 7 students into the College and in 2018 he wants to help make this transition as easy as possible. Matt coaches a basketball team and received an Academic Blue for Level 1 NCEA.

Ellesmere College Newsletter 2017 2017 Ellesmere College Dux and Proxime Accessit to Dux Jessica Dunlop - Ellesmere College 2017 Dux Jessica was Head Girl in 2017 and has a wide range of interests in music and sport including piano [Grade 8 with distinction] and captain of the Ellesmere Netball Club’s A team. Jessica has an amazing academic record including NCEA Excellence endorsements. At the Prize Giving she was awarded the Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship to a value of $15,000 and the Otago University Dux Scholarship for 2017 to a value of up to $6000. In 2018 Jessica plans to do Health Sciences at Otago University with the aim of studying medicine. Elsie Wadie - Ellesmere College Proxime Accessit Elsie has an excellent academic record including NCEA Excellence endorsements. She is a trained lifeguard and loves sport. While Basketball is her main sport she is also a Level 2 Netball umpire. In 2018 Elsie plans to go Canterbury University and study Chemical Process Engineering.

Ellesmere World Challenge trip to Nepal Ellesmere College has been working with World Challenge for several years and has sent groups of students to Vietnam and Cambodia [summer of 2014/2015], Nepal [summer of 2016/2017] and is planning a trip to Myanmar in 2018/2019. The Nepal trip involved eight Ellesmere College students together with teacher, Mr Dayle Stoliker, and World Challenge leader, Megan Butler. They spent 28 days in Nepal, trekking, helping in a school, enjoying white water rafting on the Trisuli River and viewing rare animals in the Chitwan National Park. While gaining extremely valuable memories, the students were not only able to help the children of the school but now see the world through very different eyes. Within three days of arrival, together with their trekking guide, they set off on a seven-day walk to Annapurna. Following this the team began their project work at a school just on the outskirts of Pokhara: this involved painting two rooms and rebuilding part of the entrance. A friendly game of football with the local boys always followed each day’s work. White-water rafting, a visit to the Chitwan National Park and a couple of days in Kathmandu completed the trip of a lifetime.

Ellesmere College Cultural Trip to Rarotonga Early in July a group of twelve students from the Kapa Haka group and senior Maori classes travelled to Rarotonga under the leadership of Ellesmere College teacher Matua Miru McLean. Po Whakangahau In September ten Kapa Haka groups from schools in the Selwyn District gathered for a festival of Maori Culture at Ellesmere College that filled the Riki Ellison Memorial Hall. Preceded by a Hangi, the event was compered by the very amusing Matua Ra. The programme began with a Powhiri by Ellesmere’s Junior Group and finished with a performance by the Senior Kapa Haka group. Ellesmere College’s Matua Miru McLean had written a Haka for the unknown warrior that was brought back to New Zealand in 2014. This was performed by the Ellesmere College Kapa Haka group.

For student, Katelyn Twiss the highlights of the trip were: • Helping move a Waka Ama and being rewarded by going out on a Waka Ama to visit an old shipwreck at sea. • Going to Tereora College, one of the local schools, during their cultural day, enjoying a shared lunch, watching them perform and performing to them. • Venturing around the island with one of the teachers from the College who showed cultural landmarks. • Paddle boarding around the beautiful Muri Lagoon and jumping off the wharf.

• Shopping day at the Punanga Nui Markets. • Going to a traditional church service on Sunday morning was an awesome experience especially listening to the passionate singing. • The Koka lagoon cruise and snorkelling in a marine reserve. • Attending a cultural performance where the passion for tradition and culture was clearly evident.

Ellesmere College Supports the World Vision 40-Hour Famine Living in the Selwyn District it is very hard to imagine what life must be like in war torn countries like Syria: 6 years of conflict, 400,000 people killed, 1.9 million wounded and 13 million people forced to flee their homes. The Ellesmere College World Vision 40-hour Famine team held a 20 hour long camp in June with the purpose of simulating the harsh living conditions. This enabled them to experience on a small scale what the refugees have to endure on a daily basis. The students experienced the unrelenting boredom of being stuck in a refugee camp with no entertainment complete with a surprise simulated bomb raid and terrorist attack late at night. Other activities included a race to pack a bag in seconds before escaping the conflict. There was also a blindfolded obstacle course where family members had to lead each other (to represent the blinding terror of being separated from family during evacuation), building a shelter out of cardboard and tape, and simulating the struggles of migrating to a refugee friendly country. The 40 Hour Famine team raised $1607.90 for the World Vision refugee fund.

Mental as Anything for Selwyn Sounds Audience can expect friendship and silliness from Aussie rockers By Julia Evans DURING A Mental as Anything gig in 1978, Andrew McArthur demolished an entire box of KFC chicken, 16 pieces. “No trouble,” he said. He’s had the nickname Greedy Smith ever since. McArthur and his fellow Mental as Anything bandmates will be flying from Sydney, set to play Selwyn Sounds on March 3. The festival at Lincoln Domain follows last year’s event, which saw a star studded list of Kiwi acts perform in front of about 8000 people. But this year’s Selwyn Sounds has added a couple of Australians to the bill. Mental as Anything are joined by Jimmy Barnes. Although Mental as Anything still has a bit of a New Zealand connection. “Until 2000 we had two Kiwis in the band,” he said.

So he said the band always looks forward to a trip across the ditch. “I’ve got the loveliest memories of touring with The Exponents … we did a great show in Christchurch with them,” he said. McArthur promised Selwyn Sounds would be no different. Although he did have one piece of advice: “Pack your sunscreen.” During the March set audiences can expect “a bit of friendship” and “a bit of silliness.” “People will be really surprised at how much of our stuff they know. We play songs people will like and try to win over the punter.”

Mental as Anything has spent a lot of time “polishing the old stuff” in preparation. “We’re always playing. In 40 years, the last time I had six weeks off was 1990 when I fell off a horse,” McArthur said. But the band has such an impressive back catalogue, McArthur said the music he’s currently listening to is Mental as Anything. Just so he can remember the songs. “It’s been 40 years since we wrote some of it. You forget,” he said. But even though the band has been together for more than four decades, Mental as Anything is still releasing new music. Its latest work 5 Track EP was released earlier this year.

Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us THE EUROPEAN drone fly (Eristalis tenax) is a very common and useful pollinator that is often confused for the common honeybee. There is good reason for this – it is a bee mimic and gains some protective advantage by resembling a more aggressive stinging bee. Although similar in size, anatomically they are quite different, as a honeybee has four wings and the drone fly only has two. The drone fly is a member of the Syrphidae family, usually called hover flies, and Eristalis tenax is the most widely

BUZZY BEE: The European drone fly (Eristalis tenax) is a useful pollinator often confused for the common honeybee. distributed hoverfly species in the world. As its name suggests, it hovers in one place surveying the landscape before darting haphazardly to its next hover spot before finally landing on a flower or leaf. By comparison, bees are more direct, from one flower to the next and ever-busy. An easier way to identify a drone fly is to look for the dark ‘H’ shape at the front of the abdomen.

The larvae are called rat-tailed maggots due to their very long and thin breathing siphon that resembles a tail. They are found in dirty liquid substrates such as puddles, manure or sewerage, using their snorkel-like appendage to breath as they feed. Drone flies are very active at present and males are often observed aggressively defending their territory – so keep an eye out for them in your garden.

A key area of strength in Selwyn has been our retail trade with electronic card transactions growing 10 per cent in the September 2017 year, easily surpassing the national figure of 3.8 per cent. A key driver has been rapid growth in our resident population. The population rise of 3100 in the June 2017 year equated to growth of 5.5 per cent – the second-fastest rate in New Zealand. In the context of rapid population growth, our unemployment rate stayed steady at a low of 2.2 per cent. This illustrates that job creation and general economic optimism is high, but which puts pressure on businesses to find the right employees for their needs. With this in mind, I have been meeting with businesses groups across Selwyn to understand the challenges they face, and to hear their stories of success.

I have also met with Workbridge who are a New Zealand owned (not-for-profit) professional employment agency for jobseekers and employers which has operated nationwide since 1990. Workbridge jobseekers are people who are experiencing the effects of a disability or health condition for six months or more, which has created barriers to gaining or retaining work. Workbridge employment consultants work in partnership with jobseekers and employers to match people to the right job, whether that is casual, temporary, permanent, full-time or part-time. This involves identifying a person’s work skills and personal strengths as well as the type of work they are looking for. Holiday advice - from Selwyn Veterinary Centre With the Christmas and New Year season coming up, many of us will be making plans for our holidays. Whether you are staying at home or travelling, there are many things to take into account to create a safe and happy festive period for your pets. Many cats and dogs will have already been booked into a boarding facility. If you are looking for a facility for the first time, it is prudent to visit the premises and see where your pet(s) will be staying. Visit any time during opening hours, ask about what foods they feed, exercise for the animals and vaccination requirements. Make sure the kennels and catteries are clean, comfortable, not too noisy and wellstaffed. If your pet has special needs such as medications and foods, ask whether the staff can accommodate these needs. Dogs will need to be up to date with their vaccinations including kennel cough vaccine, each boarding kennel will have a different requirement so check and make sure you enquire ahead before the stay. The same applies for cats, but they will need their flu vaccinations up to date. It is a good idea to give your pet worm and flea treatment prior to their stay also. Most catteries that board rabbits don’t have specific vaccination requirements for rabbits but best to check with the staff anyway. Always provide emergency contact numbers including your vet’s and take your pet’s food, collar, leash, medication, favourite toy, and bed. If you have several pets that need boarding, it may be more economical to hire a house or pet sitter, there are several of these services around Christchurch and Selwyn. Ask to meet the people who will be visiting your home, make sure you like them and that they are happy to follow all your instructions because all animals are different. Get references, ask around for feedback. If you are travelling within New Zealand with your pet these holidays, let your vet know ahead of time; your cat or dog may need to get their vaccinations up to date and depending on your destination, additional parasite control and vaccines

Be patient, kumara takes some time By Henri Ham LIKE POTATOES, kumara would have to be one of those vegetables that is a pretty regular feature in my pantry. They’re versatile (there’s a long list of dishes I can add kumara to) and they taste great, I’ve enjoyed growing kumara in my garden for some time. Not sure how many you’ll need? Well, this is how I work out how many to plant. If all goes well with my kumara growing I expect each plant to produce around a bucket of tubers. So, a regular-sized bundle should produce around three to four buckets of kūmara. Once you’ve worked out how many seedlings you need, the next job is to find the right spot to plant them. Each seedling needs to be planted around 50cm to 1m from the next, so you do need a bit of space to have a kūmara crop. Kūmara like a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. If you’re not sure what pH your soil is, you can buy a simple to use pH kit from your local garden centre. If the pH isn’t high enough add a bit of lime to sweeten the soil. Don’t add too much, or any if

you don’t need it, because too much lime will mean you end up with small kūmara. Now, it’s important that you raise a mound of soft soil for the kūmara to spread out in. Cultivate your soil with a rake and then mound it up in to a hill around 40cm high. Next make a small trench

Mulch!! Yes, this word pops up all the time, but it is a saving grace when it comes to protecting your plants. If you haven’t already got bark on your garden, add a layer of organic compost now. Mix it through your existing soil. Keep the watering up over the next few weeks, then look to add your bark mulch before the heat really fires up. If you have got a thin layer of bark, try and boost it up to a good 10cm, this will help get the best results. If you have already added your bark – well done! You will need to keep the watering up now to stay ahead of the game. Water is essential for healthy plant growth and development. Establish a good watering routine, ensuring you give your plants a good deep soak every few days rather than a light sprinkling every day. Weeding isn’t exactly the most enjoyable part of gardening, but skipping out of doing it is going to be costly for your plants. Not only do they look unsightly, they take up a lot of nutrients and water that your plants need, as well as fight for space. Dedicate time to remove them as soon as they pop up, it will seem less of a task if you do it that way rather than letting them build up over a month or more.

If you are growing your own potatoes, now is a good time to mound up the soil up around the tops of your potatoes. This helps to encourage a larger crop. Early spuds like Swift and Rocket may be ready for harvest. Once the crop flowers and the stems begin to wither it indicates the crop is ready. Spuds require plenty of water as the crop begins to develop.

To ensure you have enough juicy lemons, keep the water up to your plants while they are in flower now. Dry lemons are directly related to lack of water as the crop develops over summer. A layer of mulch works wonders, apply mulch after watering the soil.

the plant’s roots (via the leaves) get plenty of warmth from the sun. Water gently around the plant – it’s important not to water forcefully as this might make the mound flatten out or the plant roll off the mound. Do this for the first few days and then ensure they get some water weekly. Depending on what summer is like this year you may not need to do any extra watering at all. But if it’s hot and dry keep an eye on things and water at least weekly. Generally, try to lift the runners so they don’t put roots into the ground. The runners are the shoots that run along the ground off the main plant – much like strawberries. Lifting them off the ground will stop them from putting roots down and wasting energy that could go into forming tubers.

However, if you want to increase the size of your plot you could let a couple of runners put roots down and then cut them off and replant them. Kumara need at least four months of sunshine before they are ready to harvest. So, around February, March or April is when you can expect to start digging into your crop. It’s important you harvest before the first frost. Around this time the leaves may start to yellow, which is a sign they’re ready. So, around four months after you’ve planted put your hand in the ground and gently see if the kumara feels ready – this is called tickling. When you know they’re ready, harvest very gently. Broken kumara won’t store. You may have to really follow the plant around with your hands under the soil to ensure they come out without breaking. If you want to store them for a long time it’s important they are cured properly. This is when the starch is converted to sugar and a second skin is created that allows them to last longer in storage. If they’re cured well they can last for up to a year in storage.

Muscle Car Madness is on again in January Car and petrolhead enthusiasts from all over Canterbury and further afield, will be busy preparing and fine tuning their car’s paintwork and engines for South Island’s biggest automotive car show ‘Muscle Car Madness 2018’, which takes place annually in Rangiora, North Canterbury, at the end of January. Muscle Car Madness is a family friendly event that is bound to entertain everyone, with well over 1,200 cars on display. This three day event which is now in its 28th year will be host to a variety of cars from muscle cars to classic cars, retro and hot rods, as well as retro caravans, trucks, buses, classic motorcycles including choppers and trikes, holding the interest of the most avid automotive and retro enthusiast. Every year, cars come from around the South Island and further afield, to debut at this premier event on the car show calendar. The event opens on Thursday, 25th January for competitors and campers only, with a Downtown Street Party from 6pm to 9pm in Rangiora’s High Street. Cars will be on display and there will be music and entertainment. Saturday and Sunday, the 27th and 28th January are public show days with cars on display from 10am to 4pm and 10 live bands playing a variety of music, along with trade and food stalls, burnout competitions, children’s entertainment, and a retro beauty pageant. Prep your vehicle for the holidays Our lives can be hectic at times especially around Christmas with us forgetting to do more than fill up the car. If heading away on holidays, our vehicles need to be up to the job so organising a service and sorting out any problems may avoid inconvenience or even a ruined summer holiday. “People are overlooking servicing their vehicles however you can’t afford to be broken down on the side of the road because you forgot to have the car serviced. Getting your vehicle towed to the nearest workshop which may not be open, can be a dilemma,” says Simon, owner of Rolleston Diesel & Petrols. “Important at this time of year, is making sure your car is up to date with its servicing and that it has a current warrant of fitness and tyres in good condition, especially before heading on a long trip. These also contribute to good fuel economy,” adds Lisa Fleck who with husband Nigel own and operate Jones Road Auto and Selwyn Auto. Lisa reminds about the air conditioning, which can be unpleasant if not operating properly. Simon emphasises the importance of reliable brakes and wiper blades in good order. “It’s important to make sure your brakes have recently been checked, especially with the volume of traffic on the road. You want to be sure you can stop in a hurry if you need to and if towing a caravan, boat or loaded up with bikes and camping gear, the extra

weight can make it harder to stop quickly,” adds Simon. Simon has noticed that a number of vehicles have been fitted with inferior wiper blades that cause poor visibility when the weather is changeable from rain to sun. He recommends checking your blades and fitting ones that will do the job. While it is less likely your battery will give you trouble over summer, if it is near the end of its life it could let you down. The charge in your battery can easily be checked by popping into one of the service centres in the district. Auto electrical work is also covered in Selwyn and at Newlands in Rolleston where they sell LED lighting for vehicles. This includes 4WD light bars, directional and standard rear vehicle lighting and courtesy lighting along with batteries, power tools, hand tools, communication equipment, and electrical products. Plug-in Prius takes up electric car challenge By Ross Kiddie I GET the impression we are on the cusp of a dramatic change in the way automobiles are built, well, more specifically, the way they are powered. Some manufacturing companies have already announced a phase out of the internal combustion engine while others are rapidly increasing development of electric cars. Add to that the desire by many governments to increase the electric vehicle fleet, including New Zealand, and the stage is set for an electric revolution. In New Zealand at present there are several plug-in, electric only models in our new car market, and there are many others available pre-owned through direct imports from Japan, and if you take into account the multitude of hybrid models available new, then a definite wind of change can be felt. The car that started the hybrid revolution, Toyota’s Prius, is not available here new as a plugin, even though it is marketed extensively in Japan and the United States. However, if you are keen to join the plug-in brigade, yet find the cost of buying electric quite prohibitive, then Toyota may still have the answer. Toyota New

Zealand is importing pre-owned, low kilometre Prius models direct from Japan, they are refurbished at Toyota’s Thames Signature Class facility before offered to the dealer network. Toyota New Zealand made one of these available for evaluation, and the first thing you notice is that it still has that easy-to-drive operation that we have come to know in Prius, it is intuitive and the hybrid system is still very much intact, the plug-in facility is an extra, it’s there to offer electric-only travel. When battery energy runs low, the four-cylinder 1.8-litre petrol

mechanism cuts in to work in the way that hybrids have now become familiar. The hybrid system is a complex process but, put simply, the engine and electric motor work in unison seamlessly and efficiently, drives is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission. Because the evaluation car was pre-owned I didn’t take stock of the fuel usage benefits Prius offers, except to say new Prius is rated with a 3.4-litre per 100km (82mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average.

The plug-in effect wouldn’t alter that figure, it’s just that by plugging it in and charging you are effectively prolonging the time before petrol power cuts in. The first thing I noticed about the Prius in this form is the soft suspension; unless I’m very much mistaken, in the Japanese domestic market spring and damper rates are softer than those on Prius sold new here in New Zealand. That’s not a big deal, in fact if you look at Christchurch’s uneven road surfaces, it has a big benefit in terms of ride comfort. There is a bit of a trade-off in the way the Prius handles, it does lean a little in a corner but its not in a way that affects balance, there’s a lot of weight down low and that helps stability. And besides, Prius

is not engineered for life in the fast lane, it is a sedate tourer and is far from a performance car with its emphasis on low operating costs. As you would expect for the Japanese market, the Prius was brimming with features, and although it wasn’t leather trimmed the grey cloth was refreshing and, of course, extremely comfortable. New Zealand buyers have been served well by the beautifullypresented models from Toyota Signature Class operation. I’m a bit of a fan, as a family we own a Signature Class Toyota Celica and it was immaculate when we bought it. The Celica is far removed from the Prius concept, but the point I’m making is that it shouldn’t be viewed as a second-hand car. The evaluation car was showing just 17,000km and very similar models are listing for around $35,000. That represents a huge saving against some of the new electriconly models in today’s market here. Those who do go down that track can rest in the knowledge they are doing their bit for the environment, along with owning a reliable and future-friendly electric vehicle, plus enjoying the obvious benefits of traditional hybrid power.

What’s my house really worth? When you’ve lived in a property for a while it can be hard to be rational about its worth. How can you put a price on the spot where you’ve built so many memories with family and friends? Someone will surely recognise the hours you spent sanding back the windows or digging out the agapanthus in the garden and reward you with a high price, won’t they? Unfortunately potential buyers may see things differently, especially in a slow housing market. There are several methods you can use to gauge the worth of your property. Remember that the rateable value or RV (formerly known as the government valuation, or GV) of your property doesn’t really provide any clues. These valuations are done by the local council to work out what share of rates a household should pay. They are only done every three years and don’t take any improvements into account – increasingly, properties that include an RV figure in the advertising will come with a disclaimer that it is not indicative of current market value. These days you can gather a lot of information for free thanks to websites like Trade Me and Homes.co.nz. Trade Me’s Property Insights has information on more than 1.5 million homes, including rateable value data, previous sale prices, when the property was built and what size it is. The site also provides an estimated value range, based on a melting pot of data from sales of comparable properties, listing details and user activity. Homes.co.nz operates similarly. Its estimate service is built on a complex set of valuation models, using around 30 million pieces of data bought from

councils nationwide, plus sales values and a wide set of property features. Both sites recognise there are a number of factors at play, so they offer an estimated value range that can be quite broad. While both these sites are useful, they don’t show the full picture and should only be used as the starting point in determining value. They can’t take the condition of your property into account and they may not recognise any improvements you might have made (though homes.co.nz does allow owners to ‘claim’ their property and edit information about it). Let’s say you own a large property in an area where there have been some bigticket sales in the last year. Your property might have some serious structural issues and be in generally poor condition, yet the algorithms may claim that it is worth a lot more than any sensible buyer would pay for it because other houses in the neighbourhood have sold for high prices. The impact of this is two-fold. Firstly, the seller could anticipate a big pay-day that may never arrive; and secondly, some buyers may be put off making an offer because they think it’s out of range. There are a couple of ways to combat this. When you start working with a real estate agent to sell your property they must supply you with a current market appraisal or CMA. This is based on similar information to the online versions, but it also comes with the agent’s realtime, real-life knowledge of the area, what similar properties have sold for and the condition and particular characteristics of your own property (such as whether it has been repainted recently or it’s in a state

of disrepair). The agent will have had the chance to walk through your property and identify its unique selling propositions, such as good sun, proximity to desirable schools and other features that buyers like. It’s important to note that you may get varying CMA ranges from different real estate agents as they may each take a divergent perspective on your property that you will then need to consider. Your other option is to pay a registered valuer to provide you with an independent valuation. This service comes at a cost (the price will vary, depending on the level of detail), but it will be more accurate. The Property Institute, which represents valuers, says a registered valuation can help sellers be a little more clinical about their property’s worth.

Even with all the information you can gather, the true indication of your property’s value is what a willing buyer will pay for it at the given time that it’s on the market. A valuation, a price range or a figure reached by an algorithm is not cash in the bank.
